New and Improved Flight Simulator Build Coming Soon. Stay Tuned!

Hello everyone! In this post I’ll share with you the journey of building my first flight simulator at home. If you’re a flight sim enthusiast like me, you know how thrilling it can be to build your own setup from scratch. I’ll walk you through how I transformed a simple desk into a fully functional flight simulator cockpit.

Let’s dive in!

How Did I Start Building My Flight Simulator?

Back in 2017, I had almost no experience with building anything. I didn’t grow up learning woodworking and didn’t own many tools. Also, at that time I was living in a small one-bedroom apartment with very limited space. But despite these obstacles, I was determined to create a flight simulator that was functional, affordable, and easy to set up.

One day, I came across an old computer desk that someone had tossed out. It was compact but full of potential. I decided to repurpose it for my simulator. By removing the section meant for the computer tower, I used the leftover wood to extend the desk and create a functional setup. That simple project became the foundation of my sim for a couple of years until I was ready to rebuild and upgrade it further.

What Did the Initial Setup Look Like?

Here’s a glimpse of the desk with all components removed. Initially, there wasn’t much to it… just some extra pieces of wood added to mount the components. The framework was basic but effective.

How Did I Rebuild the Desk?

For the rebuild, I used my friend’s garage, as he generously offered his space and tools. He had an extra 4×8 foot sheet of wood, 1 inch thick, which we used for the construction. We cut a few pieces and added them to the top, bottom, and back of the desk.

Enhancements to the Desk

What Were the Dimensions and Measurements?

Here are the key specs:

Length: 48 inches

Height: 30 inches

Width: 16 inches

The middle section comprises two 29-inch pieces of wood screwed in from the top and bottom, with a small 9-inch piece in between. The FSX Dual goes on top of this. Two strips of wood run from the back to the front of the desk, and another piece slides in and out to accommodate different throttle quadrants.

How Did I Finish the Desk?

Once the construction was complete, I painted the desk black. The wood wasn't in the best condition, and our cuts weren't perfect, so the black paint helped with covering imperfections.

Final Thoughts

My flight simulator setup has come a long way from an old computer desk to a fully functional realistic cockpit. If you're passionate about flying and have some free time on your hands, building your own flight simulator can be incredibly rewarding. Don't be afraid to start small and gradually improve your setup.
